Okay, next up is 6868, Hulk's Helicarrier Breakout. Okay, I just have to say it. I can't stand these LEGO sets that basically come down to "Recreate these 30 seconds from the movie that we're using for cross-promotions!" I mean, the Avengers were created in, what, 1963 (okay, I'll admit it, I just checked, but I knew if was before I was born)? And for the key set we have to get shoe-horned in to the latest Hollywood blockbuster that will come and go and then get relegated into being replayed on some random cable station on Saturday afternoons? Is this setting something recognizable that will stand the test of time (like, for instance, the Batcave - sure, we've seen many variations over the years through comics, TV and movies, but they're all recognizably the Batcave)? I, quite honestly, do not care about this setting. I'm sure I'll see and enjoy the movie, but this LEGO rendition is fairly forgettable.

The jet is nice, but, again, I've seen better from MOCs. I hadn't noticed before that Hawkeye has a cool new compound bow.

There are some nice new printed tiles and computer screens, but, let's face it, if you're spending US$50 on this, it's probably for the figs. Loki looks pretty good. His helm is kind of silly, but it is in the comics as well.

At the time of Toy Fair, Hulk did not yet have a face. I'm sure that made him angry. You wouldn't like him when he's angry.

Thor looks good (the stickers at Toy Fair will be replaced by printed torsos), and we get a new mold for Mjolnir.

Here's another view, where you can also see Hawkeye and the Hulk. Hulk's face got better, btw.

6865 - Captain America's Avenging Cycle

Next up for examination is 6865 - Captain America's Avenging Cycle. At Toy Fair LEGO was being coy, only showing a portion of the set to avoid giving away a plot point from the upcoming Avengers movie.

However, high resolution images came out later (I think via Amazon, but I'm not sure on that). There has been much online speculation as to the identities of these as-yet-unnamed enemies (Skrull? Kree? Atlanteans? Asgardians of some sort? Inhumans? Etc etc etc).

At $US13 this is a relatively cheap set, so I'm sure most comic fans will pick this up. Basically, IMO, all you're really getting for your money is Cap himself. The motorcycle is nothing special, basically the Catwoman cycle in different colors. BTW, LEGO, Noddy, Michael Jasper, SimonStorm, Fat Tony, and doubtless other builders I'm missing have shown that you can construct really awesome motorcycles out of actual LEGO, rather than simply going with a 1 or 2 piece molded bike. WHY can't you do the same? I'm sure that we would all be much more excited to buy a set with one of those designs. Anyway, IMO the baddies are kind of lame looking, though I suppose they will closely match the movie visuals. Also the little flyer is bad as well (it looks a lot like the Green Goblin's flyer, and I really hated that flimsy thing).

Sigh. I'm sure I'll buy this for Cap and throw the rest in the parts bin. You've got my $13, LEGO, but not as much of my respect as you might have had.

6866 Wolverine's Chopper Showdown

I've been very remiss in not discussing all of the upcoming Marvel sets, so let's try to remedy that, starting with 6866 Wolverine's Chopper Showdown. At US$20 this is a really cheap entry into this line, and it gets you three awesome figs. I'll definitely be getting this for the figs alone, especially since Magneto is (IMO) the greatest Marvel villain of all time (okay, Dr. Doom is cool too, and I've always loved Spidey's set of classic antagonists).

OTOH, the helicopter is only so-so. They've made better helicopters in the past.

Batman books

Over on Brickset, Huw has pointed out that Dorling Kindersly, or DK Publishing, has a catalog of their upcoming fall releases, and it includes several LEGO books.

LEGO Batman: The Visual Dictionary looks like it will be similar to their Star Wars Visual Dictionary, with lots of high resolution photos of all of the sets and minifigures. I'm assuming this will cover both incarnations of the Batman series, as it seems like they would not have enough material if they only included the current run of sets. Interestingly, we will get an exclusive figure. No clue on what that will be as of yet.

Over on FBTB, correspondent Bigospedros was at Toy Fair London and has a report on the upcoming Marvel sets:

Now, this part of the Lego stand was shrouded (quite literally) in secret, with only one or two people being allowed in at a time. I was shown the DC sets that we’ve already seen (and some of us have already bought). The one feature of the 6863 Batwing set that they were showing off was the pretty accurate shadow the batwing creates.

We quickly moved onto the Marvel sets, which were in a section of the stand where they had a bigfig / maxifig build of Ironman which was super cool.

I kinda glossed over the Hero Factory / Super Heroes combos because they didn’t really appeal to me.

We then came to 5 new sets from the Marvel line :

6865 Captain America’s Avenging Cycle … this was the only set on display to feature Captain America, who was sat astride a motorbike. The rest of the set was missing, because Marvel had asked Lego not to show it, because it would spoil part of the movie?! Anyway, there’s another un-named minifigure and vehicle … one can only assume it’s an enemy of some sort. Priced at £11.99, so a bargain whatever!

6866 Wolverine’s Chopper Showdown … Comes with Wolverine, Magneto and Deadpool … the figs were all pretty amazing. Wolverine has normal hands holding the claw pieces, rather than anything moulded like the collectable minifig boxer, as we feared. I can’t actually remember the vehicles included in the set, sorry! Priced at £19.99.

6867 Loki’s Cosmic Cube Escape … Comes with Loki, Hawkeye and Ironman. Hawkeye is driving a jeep type vehicle with Loki in the flatbed at the back … he comes with a custom headpiece and staff and the “Cosmic Cube” (a 1 x1 clear brick!). I spent most of my time drooling over the Ironman figure, which was brilliant. My fears over the head being too large were instantly eased and I was amazed to see that the front of the helmet lifts up to reveal whichever of the double sided printed head you’ve got facing forward. Priced at £19.99, this set is a must buy purely for that fig!!

6868 Hulk’s Hellcarrier Breakout … I think this was Bruce Banner’s lab? Not sure … but anyway, the set comes with Hulk, Hawkeye, Loki and Thor. The Hulk figure was pretty damn cool, articulated and I liked the fact the head was in the shape of a normal Lego minifig head, albeit it bigger to be in scale. The Hawkeye figure seemed to have a new bow & arrow type weapon. Priced at £49.99

6869 Quinjet Aerial Battle … A pretty substantial set, with the Quinjet being pretty large, very sturdy and eminently swooshable. Quite a bit of play features (moveable wings, cockpit, pop out undercarriage thingy) and minfigures Black Widow, Ironman, Thor and Loki. Priced at £69.99, I think … although I don’t seem to have written the price down!

These sets are due to hit in April, so not long to wait.

And that was it … no sign of any Spiderman or Green Lantern sets, so maybe they’re coming later or perhaps they’re retailer exclusives.

I've already shown the wall art featuring the Hulk and Captain America, so here is the wall art featuring DC characters. BTW, if you're interested, Bigospedros took photos of other wall art featuring figs from other themes, including some odd Ninjago monsters that I hadn't seen before.

BTW, just to add one more thought about the threat to Brick Will of Brick Heroes that I noted before. It's particularly galling that this threat shows up just as we are hitting Toy Fair. Yes, LEGO is not yet letting people take photos of the sets, but that restriction generally lets up by the time that Toy Fair New York rolls around, and it's pretty inevitable that we'll see good photos of these quite soon. So why doesn't LEGO just sort of ignore the fact that there are some illegitimate leaked photos out there? It's moot anyway. I repeat - it is LEGO's job to control their own information, not ours. They need to go after those people who violate nondisclosure agreements, not those LEGO fans who are excited about their product.

Toy Fair report

Huw Millington of Brickset was at Toy Fair. While he was not allowed to take photos in the booth, he did share a report.

The Super Heroes sets were in the top-secret area of the stand under netting so they could not be photographed in the low light or from above.

All the minifigs on display appeared to be the final versions and looked excellent. Iron Man's mask does indeed hinge up to reveal his face.

Some of the sets were not on display in their entirety: LEGO was not allowed to because doing so would provide spoilers for forthcoming movies, so while Captain America was on his 'avenging cycle' in set 6865, the other character and vehicle in the set was not on display. There was only five sets on display: the Spider-Man one wasn't there so perhaps that will be a store exclusive.

Other than thinking they all looked great, I can't remember much about them! They are to be released in April.

Toy Fair London

It's Toy Fair time! Over the next few weeks different toy manufacturers, including LEGO, will display their products for the coming year at events in a few different cities. It seems that London is first up. Unfortunately, attendees are not allowed to take photos in the LEGO booth, so we can not yet see the actual sets, but the blogger at Blogomatic3000 took photos of the publicly available artwork on the outside of the booth.

I don't think there's any real news here, as we already saw prototypes of these two figs at last summer's San Diego ComicCon and we saw artwork depicting them in an advertisement blogged here recently. Oh, I suppose one relevant note is that the same claw piece that Wolverine holds is also being used for the wolfman in the upcoming monsters theme. In that photo you can see the underside of the claw piece.

Okay, so here's a little story. Back in 1989 I was in the theater on opening weekend for Batman. At one point, the Joker has brought balloons full of poison gas in a parade through Gotham, Batman swoops in with his Batplane, snatches the balloons, and whisks them away from populated areas. Then the Batplane bursts through the clouds and is briefly set against the full moon, with the bat-shaped silhouette in front of a yellow circle looking like the Bat Signal. So at this point, the guy in front of me exclaims "No way!" Now remember, this is a 121 minute film (thanks, Wikipedia), and I'm guessing this is about 100 minutes or more in. So this is the first point in the movie that this guy found something unbelievable???!? It's a freakin' comic book movie, for Pete's sake. Anyway, that's all just a lead in to AlIeNiGeNa's great Batjet based on the 1989 film version.

We knew this was coming, but LEGO has finally announced the upcoming LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes. I cannot find the official announcement anywhere on their site (rant to follow), so I'll grab the text from FBTB:

Okay, now the rant. LEGO's pressroom is absolutely horrible. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place, but whenever I go to Lego.com, and go to the 'about us' section and look under 'press releases', 'product news' or 'corporate news', there's nothing up to date. They write these press releases and send them out, but I have to get them from various other websites. I guess Ace at FBTB is probably a LEGO Ambassador, and so gets them through that channel, but why the heck does LEGO make it so hard for their true fans to find out the same information that they are giving out to other gaming or comic sites? Google News is a heck of a lot better at informing me of recent LEGO happenings than the official LEGO site ever was.

Okay, also an admission. Perhaps this will get me to play the LEGO Batman 1 game that's been sitting on my Wii for so long. In my defense, I have very small children. I only ever really play the Wii with them, and they spend the entirety of the time running Batman and Robin into the big pool of acid on the first screen. No joke. Eventually I'll persuade them to give me the control and get them past this, but then we just get stuck in the next hurdle. Oh well, they have lots of fun running Batman and Robin around the screen, and aren't really all that concerned about completing levels. BTW, it's exactly the same with our Wii Dora the Explorer game. My daughter plays it for a while, then gets stuck, and Daddy ends up playing it to get Dora through the next area. Oh well, I guess I should be happy that my kids aren't addicted to video games (yet - they've got a lot of years in front of them for that I suppose).

New polybag sets

Over on lego.com they post instructions for sets (so, for instance, when my son tore up the instructions to his new Cars set, we can still build it). Anyway, yesterday they added a bunch of new instructions, including for the upcoming polybag sets 30160, a Bat-jet-ski, and 30161, a micro-Batmobile. No release date on these yet, or even official names, but you can already download the instructions for 30160 and 30162. There's nothing too rare there, except of course the minifig, so you could probably build these today with your existing collection.

BTW, given the value on Bricklink for some of the original Batman run, and just the general collectible nature of Batman stuff, these polybag sets might be a great value to store a few copies away for resale in a few years. Personally I've never been a collector/investor in LEGO, I've pretty much only bought things I wanted for my own building. The one small SW promo set that I stashed away thinking I might resell later was found by my kids, who opened it up to play with. Oh well, it's not like that one set would have ensured their college fund.

Yesterday I stopped by my local Toys R Us (in Cherry Hill, NJ, near Philadelphia) and saw that they have some of the DC sets (specifically they had the Catwoman set, the Superman/WonderWoman/LexLuthor set, and the Batman and Joker Hero Factory sets). Sets have also been found at Toys R Us stores in Georgia and California, so this seems a pretty general thing in the US. I'm not sure yet how widely spread they are in other countries. They've also now appeared on LEGO.com (including the just-announced Joker's Funhouse, but not including the first set that was revealed, the Batcave). Just in time to buy that special Christmas gift for your favorite blogger. ;)

Here's a huge surprise (at least to me - maybe this rumor has been out there already?) - LEGO has another Batman set up their sleeves, and it's coming out in just a few days: 6857 - Dynamic Duo Funhouse Escape. For me at least the image is not currently showing up on the lego.com link, but LEGO Toy Story News had sharp eyes and grabbed a copy. At US$40, this seems like an amazing deal, with figs you would have to spend quite a bit to get otherwise. I'd say that this and the Superman set are my two "must get" sets from the initial run. I take back my previous complaint about LEGO simply repeating old Batman set designs.

During my near-month-hiatus from blogging, I totally missed the Wheels of Justice contest over at FBTB, that challenged people to build cars for the Green Lantern and Batman. DC Superheroes sets revealed!

Okay, to tell the truth, leaked images have been on the web for a bit now, but I held off on posting those here since they were clearly marked as confidential. Some of the 2012 City sets are already available, and Warren Elsmore picked up set 4440 at an official LEGO store by Washington DC (I don't know if he meant the Tysons Corner store or the Potomac Mills store). That set is exciting enough, as it has some really interesting new elements, but the relevance to this blog is that the instructions include images advertising the January release of the DC minifig sets. So, with no further delay, let's take a look. 6858 Batman vs. Catwoman and 6863 Batman vs. the Joker at $12 and $30 (US, according to the previously released information on Barnes and Noble). The first is pretty much a rehash of set 7779 from the original Batman theme. It's a cheap way to get the Batman and Catwoman figs, but other than that there's nothing special here. 6863, again, pretty much reprises the older set 7782. There's a better Joker fig, to be sure, but otherwise I'm disappointed that they didn't really improve on the Batwing design.

6862 Superman vs. Lex Luthor at $20. Now THIS is by far the most exciting thing in the line (assuming you already have some of the Batman sets from the previous line). You get three key new figs, including Wonder Woman (I was wondering where she was going to fit in) at a pretty cheap price. Lex Luthor's mecha seems pretty okay, though I'm sure any AFOL worth the bricks could easily improve on the design. I know that this is supposed to be Lex's warsuit, but my kids have been watching Megamind lately, so I just keep thinking of that big mech.

6864 Batman vs. Two Face at $50. Again, pretty much a rehash of 7781, just $20 more expensive. I'll want to see a better picture, but it looks as if the Batmobile is even a pretty similar design, which is fairly lazy of LEGO given how many different versions of the world's coolest car we've seen from different Batman comics, movies and TV shows.

6860 the Batcave at $70. I've previously looked at this. While we had a Batcave, at least this new one is not a complete copy in the way that the Catwoman, Joker and Two-Face sets are. This is more compact (and cheaper), with a couple of different play elements, and different villains (though this raises the question of the absence of the Penguin in this initial run of sets).

So, that's the first run of minifig sets. I have to say I'm underwhelmed. I know, most kids don't already have the full run of sets from 2006, but couldn't LEGO have reimagined them at least a little bit? Yes, I recognize that if you're going to commit to having a Batman-heavy line, you then pretty much have to have many of the same villains and you're pretty much required to have a Batmobile, Batwing and Batcave. That said, though, we've seen so many different iterations of these in different Batman media outlets that they could have come up with very different looking sets, or even mixed up the villains. E.g. why not have Batman chasing the Joker in the car set and Two Face in the plane set, or whatever? As noted above, the most exciting set for me (again, going on the assumption that you already have at least a couple of the Batman sets from before) is the Superman/Luthor/Wonder Woman set, as this has three completely new characters, and the mecha is at least a fun idea. BTW, no Green Lantern? I assume that he's not just a ComicCon giveaway and we'll see him in the next run of sets. I also assume that the next run of sets will again be Batman-centric, as in one of the early articles mentioned that LEGO would release sets in conjunction with the next Batman movie, so at least we'll probably get a different version of the Batmobile. Oh, here's a close-up shot of the mecha in the overall view of the page from the 4440 instructions. So, what do you guys think of the new line?

Okay, I do want to get the old Spider-Man and Batman lines reviewed before January, so I'd better get these out sooner rather than later. In 2003, LEGO discarded the idea of making Spider-Man a subtheme of Studios and made it into a stand-alone theme. The real bonus here was that this meant no more useless director minifigs, or camera elements, or other distractions from Spidey. In 2003 we got three sets, still based on the 2002 Spider-Man movie.

First up for us is set 4851, The origins. Now THIS is the set they should have started with in the previous year. With six figs you get all the key players--Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Mary Jane, and Norm Osborne/Green Goblin--and the extra fig, the scientist, actually has kind of a nice generically useful torso. There were also some nice little add on pieces, like the 2x2 tile with a DNA pattern and another 2x2 tile with a computer screen. The turntable action to transform Norman into the Goblin was a nice play feature. The only annoyance here for me was that they had tricked me into buying the much less useful Spider-Man action studio the previous year, when if I had waited for this set I would have had my Spidey fig and so much more. There was a STAMP (sticker across multiple pieces), but it was just over some basic bricks, so no great loss there. Oh, I forgot to note, they updated the Green Goblin mask from the previous year's iteration, making it look much nicer:

Rick from FBTB was at ComicCon NY and has extensive pictures of the Batcave set and of Superman. I'll let you follow the link to see more, but the new insights here are seeing Superman's back (and double sided head), the back side of the Bane fig, and also the Bruce Wayne fig that will be in the Batcave set. You could already see most of the Batcave from the high res picture posted previously - the back of the set is pretty flat and undetailed.

Ace over on FBTB has posted the high-resolution image of set 6860, the Batcave. I haven't seen photos yet from ComicCon, but will post when I do. Some of the things that most interest me include the Robin fig, so I guess this is the Tim Drake interation of Robin:

There are quite a few printed elements (at least they don't seem to be stickers). That will be good for Batman MOCs, and some of these (e.g. the computer controls) are just going to be generally useful for all builders.

For some reason I just really like the little Batphone. Hmm, all of the decorated 2-wide cheese slopes on Bricklink are stickered. maybe that bodes ill for my point about printed bricks above.

We don't see a Bruce Wayne fig, which was mentioned in the Variety article. Presumably he's behind that printed batman panel in the upper right, which I assume is the working elevator that Variety notes, where Bruce turns into Batman. I'm liking the dark blay / trans blue color scheme they've chosen here. Bane's drill vehicle is kind of fun, though I'm concerned for him that his head will be knocked off if he's actually trying to drill through the earth. OTOH, the Batcycle is a little meh for me.

LEGO is displaying set 6860, the Batcave, this weekend at Comic Con New York. I haven't seen actual pictures from the con yet, but it seems that LEGO has released an official photo to the press today as well. You can find it in Variety, of all places. They note that the set will include Bruce Wayne, Batman, Robin (note the red uniform version), Poison Ivy and Bane as figs, and will have two vehicles and a working elevator. From other reports we've seen that this will cost US$70 and Australian$130.

I was quite happy to get an e-mail today from Brick Will, a French AFOL. It turns out that for some time he's had a blog, Hoth Bricks, dedicated to Star Wars MOCs and official news. Then this July he was inspired by the announcement of the DC and Marvel licenses and he started Brick Heroes. It's in French, but with Google translate you can get a pretty good understanding (or maybe you should just learn French), but even without that he's got lots of great images. He's also been really great at ferreting out information about the upcoming line. I'll let you check out his blog for more on that. Anyway, a few months late, but I'm happy to welcome Brick Heroes to the intertubes. I'm sure I'll be checking there regularly.

This is actually fairly in keeping with what we've already seen as the price points for the January release and my previous rampant speculation. Those 45xx sets would be the Hero Factory figures. The most expensive set ($70) is the Batcave. Most of the rest of the sets are Batman based. I was hoping the $10 set would be the Superman set, but instead Supes vs Lex is the $20 set, which is still pretty good. No clue where Wonder Woman is going to show up in this series, and she's supposed to be in the January release. She'll probably be in the most expensive set, given past examples where LEGO only had a key female character (e.g. Princess Leia) in the most expensive set. I also don't see a place for a Green Lantern minifig in these sets either.

1375 - the set that wasn't

Okay, here's a different type of set review. Back when the first official Spider-Man sets were announced, there was supposed to be a third set, 1375 - Wrestling Scene. It showed up on early lists of upcoming sets, and photos were leaked that seemed to be authentic. Unfortunately, this set was later canceled.

The potential set would have focused on the scene where Peter Parker challenges a professional wrestler with his newly acquired powers. Of course this is a key scene in Spidey's history, because Peter's failure to stop a robbery of the wrestler's manager later led to the death of Uncle Ben, and Peter's vow to use his power to fight crime. The set itself was cute. In my opinion they could have removed the cameraman - remember the first Spidey sets were a sub-theme of Studios, so they were all supposed to be on movie sets. Anyway, we got that Spidey fig the next year in 4850, Spider-Man's First Chase, but we never did get the Macho-Man (er, Bonesaw McGraw) fig.

Interestingly the set was supposed to include a backdrop depicting the crowd at the wrestling match. This is the same backdrop card that was released in the Action-Pack expansion, as noted in my previous set review. So this set could be recreated easily from released elements, except for the Macho-Man torso (or maybe is that torso in some other LEGO set?).

It's been forever since I've done a set review. I want to try and get through all of the old products from the previous official Spider-Man and Batman themes before the new LEGO Super Heroes sets come out in January, so I'll make a concerted effort to get these posted. Okay, I've already mentioned the first two Spidey sets, 1376 - Spider-Man Action Studio and 1374 - Green Goblin. Soon after these came out, LEGO advertised that you could buy the sets in a bundle through Shop At Home and would get an addition: 10075 - Spider-Man Action Pack.

The addition was simply another 25 pieces, a cardboard backdrop, and instructions to expand the building from set 1376 and add a balcony. This allowed you to recreate the Green Goblin's first public appearance from the 2002 Spider-Man movie. Mean Greenie flies in to this public festival on his glider, kills off several of Oscorp's board, and in the process destroys a balcony and almost kills Mary Jane. Spidey of course saves the day.

When this first came out it was a nice little addition. If you hadn't previously bought sets 1374 and 1376, you could get them together and get a few extra bricks in the process (I think in the original offer at no extra cost versus buying the sets individually). I'd already bout 1376, so it wasn't worth it to me. Later they offered the little expansion by itself for $7, which was really not worth it for a handful of bricks. You could easily modify set 1376 with your existing collection to make something comparable.

Quick question for you ComicBrick readers out there. I never bought this expansion, so I never actually held the cardboard backdrop in my hands. On both Peeron and Bricklink they show what I assume is the other side of the backdrop:

Let me start out by saying that Kaminoan's recent Wonder Woman is an incredible custom. So I'm not trying to take away from that in any way, but rather to build upon it. There are many amazing customizers out there, and Kaminoan is surely in the top tier (many others, I'm not going to get started lest I give insult by leaving out someone), who make these great customs, and stop there. Don't get me wrong, I'd like to emphasize again how much I love this custom. I also like how this (and other recent Kaminoan offerings) have a dynamic presentation, adding in the backdrop etc. That said, I do wish that these amazing customizers would go the next step and put their figs into action, such as these scenes and covers. That would just take something amazingly cool and make it even cooler. Okay, off my soapbox, back to admiring the great custom work here:

Okay, this is based on nothing at all but my own musings, but here are my thoughts on the partial set list I noted yesterday.

* LEGO 4526 Batman $14.99
* LEGO 4527 Joker $14.99
* LEGO 4528 Green Lantern $14.99
These are surely the large constructed figs we saw in the ComicCon display:

The price points of the Hero Factory line (very comparable to these) are 7.99, 12.99 and 29.99. Those large comic characters are somewhat comparable to the 12.99 Hero Factory sets, and if you throw in a couple of dollar mark-up due to licensing, it comes out about right.

These are surely the minifig sets. I do note that there is no set under $10, probably due to the licensing markup. Of course, it's not such a huge loss since these sets aren't army builders - who needs a squadron of Supermans? Maybe one extra to make custom Bizarro, but one of each fig is enough for me. We know from the press release earlier this summer that the January release will include "13 characters, including Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and villains the Joker, Bane, Harley Quinn and Lex Luthor." There are 6 unnamed characters there, but we've already seen from ComicCon versions of the Green Lantern, Catwoman, and Poison Ivy. 13 characters spread over five sets is pretty impressive. I'm guessing that the big $69.99 set will be centered around the Justice League, and include Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and the Green Lantern battling some supervillain. We do know that one set is the Batcave (as it is one of the announced prizes in the official contest), so perhaps that is the $49.99 set. I'm guessing that at least two of the other sets will be Batman themed. My reasoning is that LEGO really likes to focus on vehicles. For instance, if you look at the Star Wars theme, there are many great settings in the movies, but the bulk of the sets are ships. If you look at the official Batman line from a few years ago there are ten fig-scale vehicle sets, two settings (the Batcave and Arkham), and one large UCS vehicle. The other major heroes mentioned in the DC universe just don't have as much potential for set variety. Besides, as Jack Nicholson's Joker said of Batman: "Where does he get those wonderful toys?" So we can also guess that the missing three figs from the promised thirteen characters are probably Batman-centric - Robin, the Riddler, maybe Two-Face. If this is true, it's a slight disappointment for me, since we've already seen a whole line of Batman, and there's a promised next wave of Batman coming out next summer connected with the Dark Knight Rises release. I would rather they spread the love a little, but, again looking back at the Star Wars license, how many iterations of the X-Wing have we had over the years? Complete speculation here, but I'd love to see the cheap set be Superman vs Lex Luthor. Supes is THE iconic superhero, and every kid needs a version of him, even if they can't get the high-end set that will surely have him.

One other thought - you'd think that with a blog like this, I probably read lots of comics. But I really don't any more. My comic love is more driven by the years I spent flipping pages as a kid, rushing home from school to catch the reruns of Adam West that came on at 3:30 (school got out at 3:00), getting up on Saturday morning to watch the Superfriends. I had a couple of friends in college who were comic book readers and regularly bought new copies, and so I would sit in their dorm rooms and read through them, but other than that I just flip through them at Borders (er, scratch that, Barnes and Noble now) on occasion. I tend to catch the big summer movie blockbusters, or at least when they get to HBO and Netflix. That's all the preliminary to say that I'm fairly ignorant of what's going on now in print. So, for instance, when I see MOCs based on the expansion of the Green Lantern series to all these different colors, I end up running around the internet reading up on it. That said, I was just reading how DC is rebooting everything, and starting all of their titles over at issue 1. I have no idea what that's going to mean for these heroes, but it seem that if LEGO is working with DC on this, the sets may well reference the new details of the DC universe rather than those we grew up with. It will be interesting to see if and how that manifests itself in these sets.

Fine Clonier made versions of Hank Pym at his normal scale, as Giant-Man, and as Ant-Man. Those aren't photoshop tricks, he used one of those minifig flashlights to make the Giant version and one of the tiny trophy elements to make the Ant version.

If you're going to BrickCon, there's going to be a collaborative display devoted to the upcoming Super Heroes theme. Participants will bring buildings to connect together to make a city street, with heroes and villains battling it out. Prizes will be awarded for:
Most Heroic - Best Hero MOC (duh)
Most Villainous - Best Villain MOC (again, duh)
The Sidekick (category to be defined at the Convention)
The Kirby - Art award/Most artistic. Named after the late, great Jack Kirby!
